Media Freedom in the Age of Big Data

For the 10th time, the state capital of Potsdam is hosting the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium. The centerpiece of the event is a high-profile conference attended by key representatives from the media, politics and academia from Europe and abroad, all gathered to discuss current issues affecting media policy and freedom of the press. This annual event is accompanied by the „Young European Journalists Workshop“, which invites young journalists from across Europe to come to Potsdam and work together on media projects. Another highlight of the event is the presentation of the M100 Media Awards. This non-endowed award goes to individuals who have left their mark on Europe and on the world by standing up for freedom and democracy.“ Dedicated to the issue of „Media Freedom in the Age of Big Data“, guests at this year’s Colloquium discuss the question of how to deal with the enormous amount of data collected today. What risks and opportunities does ‚big data‘ pose?
Part of the conference is the ‘M100 Young European Journalists Workshop’, which every year invites young journalists ranging in age from 18 to 26 from all over Europe to Potsdam. The goal of the five-day workshop is to give attendees the practical and theoretical expertise necessary for a career in journalism. On the evening of the conference, the event culminates in the presentation of the M100 Media Award. The award recognises individuals who have left their mark on Europe and the world. The M100 Media Award is presented to the former boxing champion and current Mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko. The M100 Special Award goes to the Ukrainian collective YanukovychLeaks. The M100 Sanssouci Colloquium traditionally ends with a gala dinner in the New Chambers, where all participants meet again and can use the opportunity to delve further into the issues of the day.
